Key Characters:

Growth Form: Perennial or sometimes annual herbs.

Stems: Stems erect, 0.2–7 dm long, branched only at base.

Roots:

Leaves: Leaves simple. Opposite. Blades lanceolate to linear or oblong, 4–25 mm long, 1–8 mm wide. Base cordate to rounded. Surfaces glandular punctate with pale and inconspicuous glands. Margins somewhat revolute, margins entire. Sessile and usually surrounding the stem. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers few in cymes or occasionally solitary in the upper 1–3 leaf axils. Flowers bisexual (perfect). Sepals lanceolate to narrowly elliptic, 2.8–7.5(–9) mm long, glandular punctate toward the tips. Petals yellow or orange, 5–10 mm long. Stamens 30–50, in inconspicuous clusters. Ovary superior; styles 3.

Fruit: Capsules ovoid to cylindrical; 2.5–8 mm long. Seeds yellowish brown; cylindrical; ca. 0.5 mm long; longitudinally ribbed.
